The next time your grown up is driving on South Main Street be sure to look out the window and marvel at all the beautiful, historic homes.  Findlay is home to many Victorian homes, most of them built in the 1890s during the oil boom (look for the Karg Well to learn more about the gas boom!).  During this time Findlay saw a lot of new people moving to town and it created a new boom...this time for housing!

Take a stroll through historic South Main and take a look at the homes, you can even follow a walking tour so you can learn a little more about each of the houses and the families that live in them. If you want a peek inside them be sure to go to Hancock Historical Museum’s Historic Homes tour that takes place every other year!

Victorian homes, like the ones on South Main, are some of the most recognizable and beloved homes in American architecture. They were built primarily between 1860 and 1900, during the reign of Queen Victoria of England, and the style quickly became popular across the United States as the country grew and prospered after the Civil War. Victorian homes are known for their decorative details, including ornate woodwork, steep pointed roofs, wide front porches, and large windows. The style came in several varieties, including Queen Anne, Italianate, and Gothic Revival, each with its own distinctive look.
