Cardinals

The northern cardinal is the official state bird of Ohio, designated in 1933. Cardinals are one of the most beloved backyard birds in the state, and it is easy to see why. The male cardinal (shown in the mural!) is known for its brilliant red feathers, which make it stand out against the snow in winter and the green leaves of summer. Female cardinals are a warm brownish-tan with touches of red on their wings and crest.

Cardinals do not migrate, meaning they stay in Ohio year-round and are a familiar and cheerful sight in neighborhoods, parks, and woodlands in every season. Seven states have chosen the cardinal as their state bird, but Ohioans have long claimed a special affection for this sturdy, colorful bird that weathers every season without leaving home. Sometimes you can see cardinals right in Brucklacher Memorial Park – keep an eye out for them!
